John’s first four years in radio were spent in Martinsville, Virginia, working at a daytime station, WFIC-AM. Then, in 1982, John made the move to join the Jefferson-Pilot owned WHSL-FM in Wilmington, North Carolina.  After two years of doing mornings on the coast, John arrived in Augusta in April 1984.

For the next 10 years, John worked for WZNY (SUNNY 105).  During his tenure at SUNNY, John was, at times, the Morning Show Co-Host, the Mid-Day Personality, the Music Director and the Program Director.  He held those titles through four ownership groups and numerous General Managers.

In 1994, Savannah Valley Broadcasting, the owner of WBBQ bought WZNY and John made the switch to those heritage Augusta call letters.  John continued to do mornings on WBBQ  when the station was purchased by Clear Channel in 2000, at which time he added the duties of Program Director and Operations Manager for the seven-station cluster.

He remained in that role until September 2003, when he was named Community Relations Director and Non-Traditional Revenue Manager of the cluster.  John left Clear Channel in October 2007.

In 2008, John created The Murto Group.  His company provides content to radio stations on several media platforms.  In June 2008, his company created The Augusta Golf Show with John Patrick, which currently airs in seven markets.  In January of 2013, 2014 and 2016 the International Network Of Golf named “The Augusta Golf Show with John Patrick” the best radio golf show in America.  Through the years, the guests on The Augusta Golf Show with John Patrick have included among others, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw, Bob Jones IV, Jim Nantz, Peter Alliss, Renton Laidlaw, Ian Baker Finch, Peter Kessler, Kelly Tilghman and more. John is also Co-Host of the daily Buzz on Biz radio program heard on Beasley’s NEWS TALK SPORTS 1630, WRDW. In June 2008, John received the Lifetime Achievement Silver Medal award from the Augusta Advertising Federation for his years of Broadcasting and Community Service.

John has served as the Master of Ceremonies for numerous events in the CSRA including the annual Georgia Golf Hall of Fame induction banquet from 1992 to 2009.

He has also served as Master of Ceremonies for the annual Ray Guy award banquet.  The Ray Guy award is given to the nation’s best college punter each year and named for the former Oakland Raiders punter and Thomson, Georgia, native Ray Guy.

For 12 years John has been the Master of Ceremonies for the annual Mayor’s Masters Reception, honoring Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watosn and Fuzzy Zoeller, among others.

John has also served as the emcee at the annual Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame banquet, and  was the Master of Ceremonies as the city congratulated the Augusta State Men’s Golf team on both their 2010 AND 2011 NCAA Division I National Championships.

John has served twice on the Board of Directors of the Imperial Theatre. He has served as its President, and is currently on the Advisory Committee.  He has also served on the Board of Directors of the local Ronald McDonald House.  He also served on the on the Board of the Augusta Sports Council, the media committee for the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and was the  Chairman of the organizing committee of the Miracle League with the Family Y.  The Miracle League debuted in Augusta in the fall of 2010.  John is now the Chairman of the Adaptive Programs Committee at the Family Y.

In 2001, John began a yearly radiothon for MCG Health’s Children’s Medical Center. John hosted the radiothon for the first three years. It continues every year, with over $5 million has been raised for the hospital.

In 2019, John covered his 35th Masters Tournament.  His reports through the years have been heard on the Georgia News Network, the BBC, the Australian Radio Network and KMOX radio in St. Louis.
